"All the while I was at the law firm, I was reminded of you and the things I had read in your articles (reminding me that it was really very educational for me to work on your project). This company was a prime example of building problems into their operating structure and then bemoaning "people failure" for the inevitable results. For instance, one central printer served the printing/faxing/copying/scanning needs of scores of employees in several departments, many of whom spent 2-10 or more minutes several times a day walking to this location, checking to see if their fax had gone out or their print job was among the pages of output spread around on a nearby table (as people fished for their own), or waiting in line to use the machine. I figured they could go to Staples and buy an inexpensive fax/print/copy machine for every employee and within a month or so more than recover the cost of all the employee down time, not to mention making the whole process much more pleasant, reliable and streamlined. Because they had so many phone lines, I don't think even that would have been an obstacle. No more peptalks about the importance of everyone trying to be right there the the printer at the right time to retrieve their job when it first comes out, not mixing up other people's jobs and leaving them all over the table etc.! I kept wishing, David, they could have you out there as a guest speaker!"
